Front mount or factory top mount on the WRX?

The WRX comes with a top mount intercooler that sits above the engine. It keeps charge piping short for quick response, but it also sits in engine heat, which makes it prone to heat soak on tuned cars.

A front mount intercooler moves the core to the front of the car, into cooler airflow. It typically keeps intake temperatures lower and more consistent under sustained load, at the cost of longer piping. A front mount kit also needs its own charge pipes, while a charge pipe made for the factory top mount upgrades the piping without changing the intercooler.

Why upgrade a heat exchanger or add a pump?

Engines like the BMW S58 and Infiniti VR30 use air-to-water charge cooling. Coolant carries heat from the charge air cooler to a front heat exchanger, moved by a pump. A larger heat exchanger adds cooling capacity, and an auxiliary pump moves coolant faster. Both help keep intake temperatures in check on tuned cars and during repeated pulls.

• Match the exact model and generation. The 2015 to 2021 and 2022 and later WRX use different parts.
• Match charge pipes to your intercooler. Some charge pipes are made for the factory top mount intercooler, while front mount kits include their own.
• Upgrade the system that limits you. On a WRX, heat soak usually points to the intercooler. On an S58 or VR30, the heat exchanger and pump are the usual upgrades.
• Pick a finish. Some parts come in raw or black wrinkle finishes, or with different logo options.
• Plan for tuning. Intercooler and heat exchanger upgrades typically work with the factory calibration, but tuned cars benefit most.

• Plan for bumper removal on front mount intercooler and heat exchanger installs.

• Seat couplers and clamps fully, then pressure-test the charge system.
• Bleed air-to-water systems fully after installing a heat exchanger or pump, and confirm the pump runs.
• Recheck clamps after the first few heat cycles.
