What is a turbocharger?

A turbocharger is a forced-induction device that uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine, which drives a compressor that packs more air into the engine. More air, matched with more fuel and a proper tune, means more power, better efficiency, or both.

Why do modern vehicles use turbochargers?

Turbos let manufacturers pull more power from smaller, more efficient engines while meeting emissions standards. A turbocharged 4- or 6-cylinder can deliver V8-like torque with much better fuel economy.

What is the difference between a stock (OEM) and a performance turbo?

A stock or OEM turbo is designed to hit factory power, emissions, and reliability targets. A performance turbo uses different wheels, housings, or bearings to flow more air and support higher horsepower, usually requiring fuel, exhaust, and tuning upgrades to run safely. Turbo versus supercharger: what is the difference?

A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas, while a supercharger is driven mechanically by a belt off the engine. Turbos generally offer better efficiency and more tuning flexibility, while superchargers deliver more immediate low-RPM response at the cost of some parasitic drag.

Do electric and hybrid vehicles use turbochargers?

Many plug-in and mild hybrids still use turbocharged gas or diesel engines. Pure battery EVs do not, since they do not burn fuel or move air through cylinders.

Can you confirm turbo fitment for me?

In most cases, yes. Give us your year, make, model, engine size, and engine code, plus the OEM part number if you have it, and we can confirm the correct part number. Some platforms with mid-year changes or engine swaps may also need photos, casting numbers, or tag information from your existing turbo.

Can I upgrade to a larger turbo on my stock engine?

You can physically bolt on a larger turbo, but that does not mean it is safe or that it will perform well on a stock engine and tune. Bigger turbos usually need fuel system upgrades, supporting mods such as an intercooler and exhaust, and custom tuning to avoid detonation or engine damage.

Will a turbo upgrade void my factory warranty?

A power-adding modification can affect your factory powertrain warranty, but under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a dealer generally cannot void your entire warranty just because you added a part. They have to show that the modification caused the specific failure. If your vehicle is still under warranty, talk to your dealer or an experienced performance shop before modifying it.

Do I need other parts when replacing my turbo?

Usually, yes. At a minimum, plan to replace gaskets, seals, and any oil feed or return lines that are restricted, plus single-use hardware. For many applications we recommend a turbo install kit with gaskets, studs, crush washers, and new oil lines.

Turbo Types and Construction

What is the difference between new, remanufactured, rebuilt, and used turbos?
  • New: all new components, built to OEM or better specs.
  • Remanufactured: fully disassembled, cleaned, machined, and reassembled with new wear parts to meet or exceed OEM standards.
  • Rebuilt: repaired enough to function, with quality that varies widely by shop.
  • Used: pulled from another vehicle with unknown history and remaining life.
What is a CHRA or cartridge?

The CHRA (center housing rotating assembly), or cartridge, is the core of the turbo. It holds the shaft, compressor wheel, turbine wheel, and bearings. Swapping the cartridge can restore performance when your housings are still in good shape.

What is a wastegate and why does it matter?

A wastegate controls boost by routing exhaust around the turbine once a target pressure is reached. A sticking, leaking, or misadjusted wastegate can cause overboost, underboost, limp mode, or turbo and engine damage.

What is a variable geometry turbo (VGT or VNT)?

A VGT uses moveable vanes in the turbine housing to change exhaust flow and control boost without a traditional wastegate. These turbos can deliver strong low-end torque and better efficiency, but they are more sensitive to soot, oil quality, and tune quality.

Symptoms and Diagnostics

What are the common signs of a failing turbocharger?

Watch for whistling or siren noises, loss of power, black or blue smoke, high oil consumption, check-engine or boost-related codes, and visible shaft play or damage on inspection.

Can I drive with a bad or blown turbo?

You may be able to limp a short distance, but it is risky. A failing turbo can shed metal into the intake or exhaust, dump oil into the engine, contaminate the catalytic converter or DPF, and turn a turbo repair into an engine replacement.

What causes turbochargers to fail?

The leading causes are poor oil quality or pressure, dirty or restricted oil feed lines, foreign object damage, excessive exhaust temperatures from bad tuning, boost leaks, and skipped maintenance.

How long should a turbocharger last?

With proper oil changes and maintenance, many OEM turbos last well past 100,000 miles. Aggressive driving, poor maintenance, contaminated oil, and low-quality remans are the fastest ways to cut that short.

Installation and Tuning

Can I install a turbocharger myself?

If you are an experienced DIY mechanic with the right tools, yes. For most people, though, we strongly recommend a professional shop. Incorrect installation, contamination, or a missed priming step can destroy a new turbo in minutes.

Do I need a tune after installing a new turbo?

A factory-equivalent replacement usually does not require a tune. If you are stepping up to a larger or high-flow turbo, plan on professional tuning to match fuel, timing, and boost to the new hardware.

How do I prime a new turbocharger?

Pre-oil the turbo through the oil feed port, then crank the engine with fuel and ignition disabled to build oil pressure before the first start. Never start the engine dry or rev it hard right after install.

Do you include installation instructions with your turbos?

We provide general installation guidelines and break-in recommendations. Because steps vary by platform, we still recommend using factory service information or a qualified shop familiar with your engine.

Is there a break-in period for a new turbo?

Yes. The first few heat cycles matter most. Let the engine idle for a bit after start-up, avoid full-throttle launches early on, and always allow a proper cool-down before shutting the engine off.

Maintenance and Longevity

How can I make my turbocharger last longer?

Follow your oil change intervals, use quality oil and filters, fix boost and oil leaks quickly, warm the engine before driving hard, and let it idle briefly after heavy use so the turbo can cool.

Do I really need a turbo timer?

Modern cooling systems and good habits make turbo timers less necessary than they once were. If you shut down right after towing, racing, or a long high-speed pull, a timer or a disciplined idle-down routine can still help.

What oil is best for a turbocharged engine?

Use the weight and specification your manufacturer recommends, ideally a high-quality synthetic. Turbocharged engines are hard on oil, so this is not the place to cut corners.

Will an aftermarket air intake or exhaust help my turbo?

A well-designed intake and exhaust can reduce restriction, lower exhaust gas temperatures, and support higher safe boost. Poorly designed parts can do the opposite, adding turbulence, leaks, or tuning headaches. Check emissions legality for your area before buying.

Why are some turbos more expensive than others?

Price comes down to brand, construction (new versus reman), materials, bearing type (journal versus ball bearing), and whether it is a standard replacement or a performance upgrade. Emissions-equipped diesel turbos and VGT units tend to be more complex and cost more.

What is a core and why is there a core charge?

A core is your old turbo that can be remanufactured. The core charge is a refundable deposit that you get back when we receive your rebuildable turbo in acceptable condition. See our Core Policy for the full details.

How long do I have to return my core?

You typically have 90 days from the invoice date, unless a product page states otherwise. Ship it promptly to avoid losing part or all of the refund, and check our Core Policy for the specifics.

What happens if my core is damaged or not rebuildable?

If your old turbo is cracked, heavily corroded, or missing major parts, the remanufacturer may reduce or deny the core credit. In that case we share the inspection result so you know exactly what was found.

What kind of warranty do MyTurbos.com turbos have?

Coverage is provided by the manufacturer and varies by brand and product type. Most replacement turbos carry a limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, but not against improper installation, contamination, or tuning issues. What can void my turbo warranty?

The usual culprits are dirty or restricted oil lines, no proof of oil changes, improper installation, running an upgraded turbo without a tune, overspeeding the turbo, and physical damage from foreign objects.

How fast can I get my turbo?

Most in-stock turbos ship the same or next business day. Ground delivery reaches most of the continental United States within about one to five business days, and expedited options are usually available at additional cost.

Can I return a turbo if it does not fix my issue?

If the turbo is unused, uninstalled, and in resellable condition, you can usually return it within our 30-day window. Request an RMA first, and note that shipping and any restocking fee may apply. Installed, used, or contaminated turbos cannot be returned and must go through the warranty inspection process instead.

What payment methods do you accept?
